Gamification, omnichannel and more: Zebra Fashion is redefining loyalty in Switzerland with its own app

Zebra Fashion is a Swiss fashion company that appeals to fashion and price-conscious customers throughout Switzerland with its 92 shops.

Expansion is already firmly in sight, but in order to offer customers an even better shopping experience, Zebra Fashion has been focusing on another key element in its digital transformation strategy since September 2024: the new Zebra Fashion app.

The successful concept of the app launch: ‘Simplicity First’

The go-live of the app in mid-September was a complete success: almost 30,000 users registered within the first three weeks.

Zebra Fashion focussed on maximum simplicity, true to the motto ‘Simplicity First’. An uncomplicated app download and a quick registration process give customers access to all the benefits of the Zebra Fashion app. For the app launch, for example, a -20% promotion was launched, which was granted to all app users on their first purchase immediately after registration.

Early soft launch: putting the app through its paces

The soft launch of the app began with an intensive test phase in which the team put the app through its paces before it officially went live for Zebra Fashion customers.

On the one hand, this strategy promised security for the actual go-live of the app for customers, as the loyalty solution could still be put through its paces. On the other hand, this approach also proved successful for employees, as they were able to familiarise themselves with hello again's new all-in-one loyalty solution before the launch - thus ensuring excellent advice.

Complete loyalty solution from hello again

Zebra Fashion relied on hello again's expertise, particularly for the specific design and implementation of the new app. ‘hello again offers a complete solution: evaluation, direct customer approach, customised design. It's easy to implement, even for a small team,’ reports Michael Solomun, CEO of Zebra Fashion.

The quick implementation and user-friendly structure convinced him to give the go-ahead for the collaboration with hello again after a comprehensive selection of providers - with the screening of over 10 alternative solution providers in the loyalty sector.

The initial feedback a few weeks after the launch shows that the right path has been taken: The new loyalty solution has been very well received both internally by staff and by customers.

App Engagement

Play, save and buy: Gamification as the highlight of the app

The wheel of fortune is an absolute favourite in the Zebra Fashion app. Hardly any other feature epitomises gamification better: with over 71,000 spins in just three weeks and 60% of all registered users having taken part at least once, the wheel of fortune is the star of the new app's features.

It ensures active user behaviour and has a positive branding effect at the same time. Michael Solomun, CEO of the Swiss fashion retailer, is delighted with the effect: ‘It's the perfect module to put the spotlight on our brand.’

The wheel of fortune was placed prominently in the app via a banner so that it immediately catches the eye of customers and every customer can take advantage of it.

More gamification features planned

Due to the great success of the wheel of fortune, there are plans to expand the gamification features in the medium term: With hello again as a strong partner, app users will be offered a different element depending on the time of year and seasonality, which not only promotes engagement within the app, but also brings real added value for users in the form of high-quality rewards and prizes.

Effective customer communication thanks to omnichannel approach

The new Zebra Fashion app also simplifies the entire customer approach. The omnichannel approach is a top priority at Zebra Fashion: Customers can utilise all the benefits of the app both online and offline, which not only increases shopping frequency but also encourages online purchases.

The results are impressive: On average, app users spend 32.7% more than non-app users. The rewards programme in the app is deliberately kept simple in order to make the benefits clear to customers at first glance.

‘With two clicks, you can download the app directly and have access to all the benefits. Other loyalty systems take much longer, minutes, sometimes with additional analogue paper processes that take a very long time. This simplicity is very well received by our customers.’

App launch: from POS and flyers to social media and influencers

Zebra Fashion emphasised a well thought-out communication strategy right from the start. Employees received intensive training in the run-up to the launch so that they could act as competent contacts in the shops.

The app was advertised prominently at the checkout - customers who installed the app immediately received a 20% discount on their first purchase. This simple but effective measure helped to boost registrations right from the start.

Flyers in combination with influencer campaigns

But that was not all: Zebra Fashion ran a household campaign in which 1.5 million households were made aware of the app via flyers. The link to a special reward via a QR code helped to increase the reach.

Numerous online channels were also used: Influencer campaigns on Meta, in collaboration with large and small influencers, generated additional attention. The brand colour pink was present throughout and ensured a high recognition value.

More than just an app:

The success story of the Zebra Fashion app does not end with the launch. More focus is being placed on the brand, the digitalisation of customer relationships is in full swing and further features are in the starting blocks.

‘The Advent calendar and the daily scratch card are the next steps,’ reveals Michael Solomun. Both features are intended to maintain the high activity rate and create additional incentives to open the app every day.

The success of the Zebra Fashion app is based on a simple concept: offering customers real added value as quickly as possible. The 4.9 stars in the app stores speak for themselves. The step towards digitalisation has paid off and Zebra Fashion is optimistic about the future. ‘We are completely satisfied. We took the right step and our customers love the new Zebra Fashion app.’
